hello there,

ok so im getting a savannah monitor on next friday and im building my own cage 6x3x3 and ive read that the substrate should be atleast 2 feet.......so my question is if thats true shold i make my cage 6x5x3? so that there will be 3 feet above him instead of 1 foot........also i read that outside dirt is the best, well can i just dig up some dirt from my yard and throw it in the cage or should i do something to the dirt first?

     thanks in advance,

justin

The bigger the enclosure the better, although from what I know sav’s do not really climb all that much. If you build the cage with wood be sure to seal it (you can sue the water based stain and water based sealer available at Home Depot, which dries really fast).

As for substrate, I use “screened” soil from Home Depot (to avoid any bugs, etc…) . In my opinion 2 feet is plenty of depth for digging.

Be sure not to use any screening so that you can provide adequate humidity. Here’s a shot of my latest monitor enclosure. Good luck with yours and have a good one.
